Project: Chowilla Floodplain DVD Map Production

The Chowilla floodplain is one of six ‘icon sites’ identified as part of The Living Murray Program.  Through The Living Murray, a package of works and measures were coordinated by the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) to ensure that environmental water can be delivered to maximise the ecological benefits for this significant site.

In 2013, the production of a DVD was approved to provide background information about the icon site, promote the sites unique assets and the benefits of of environmental watering including the installation of the environmental regulator and associated works in Chowilla Creek.

Mapping Services Australia (MSA) were contracted to provide the mapping support and animations for the DVD project and worked closely with the with the Project Management and Production team to ensure the desired outcome was achieved.

Our involvement included preparing mapping images showing the location of the six Living Murray Icon Sites within the Murray Darling Basin, the extent of the Chowilla Floodplain on the SA side of the SA/NSW border, approved environmental watering sites and the location of new and upgraded infrastructure related to the regulator project.  Vision using a ‘flyin’ effect was prepared to show the location of the environmental regulator on Chowilla Creek, while inundation maps were prepared to display the extent of watering at various levels and demonstrate the benefits of manually regulating the water flow during agreed times.

Google Earth Pro was used to prepare the numerous mapping animations, supported by local data held and prepared by Mapping Services Australia or provided by DEWNR, while some effects and labeling were completed at production level.
